Hi all,
I’m very excited to announce my new post with Volunteer Wood Buffalo. I’ve accepted the position of Communication Coordinator and will begin my new job June 4, 2008. This is a nonprofit organization that acts as an advocate for volunteers in my community. http://www.volunteerwoodbuffalo.ca/
This combines my love of writing/communicating with my desire to help others make a difference in their community.
Happy day!
Cheers, Julie

It’s September and I can hardly believe it. Lots happening these days:
I just finished teaching an online query letter class for KOD. I had a great group of students and hope to hear lots of good news from them in the near future.
I’m leading a Novel In 90 program for both CARWA and Heartbeat RWA. Both groups have several people participating. We started 6 days ago and I’ve already got 31 pages written. Yay!
I just submitted an inquiry to become the Municipal Liaison for my home city for National Novel Writing Month. If you’ve never participated in a NaNoWriMo I highly recommend it!
I’ve teaching three classes this fall for my local college. These are non-credit courses, but there seems to be lots of interest already. The classes are: Writing For Magazines, Discover Your Writer Within – Novels and Discover Your Writer Within – shorts. Go page 54 of the Calendar to view the courses.
Keep your eyes open for the November issue of Canadian Living (it’s usually out mid to late October). I’ve got an article in it entitled, Pillow Talk, that discusses the health benefits of sleeping with the correct pillow for you and where to buy them.

My apologies for not keeping up with the news! I’ve been keeping really busy as of late, working on 3 different writing projects, as well as keeping up with my duties as president of Heartbeat RWA.
So here’s what’s been happening:
The RWA conference in Dallas was wonderful!! I was able to spend time with my dear friends Dianne and Joel, Nancy and Donnell! You’re all fantastic!! I hosted the Heartbeat RWA lunch, which was a complete success. It was so great to see so many of our online chapter’s members in one room. I networked all over the place and had two excellent editor/agent appointments. I pitched 3 books (not all 3 to the same person) and have gotten two of the submissions out, with one left to go. This last one is a medical thriller I’ve been working on and I want those first 3 chapters to really shine, so I’m taking another week or two to get that done.
My article, “Sleepy Time Snacks”, is in the August edition of Canadian Living, on stands now.
Next week I start teaching an online class for KOD, RWA’s mystery/suspense chapter on query letters, cover letters and submission packages. I have a ton of info to talk about, so I hope my students are ready for it. J
Coming up in September will be another Novel in 90 program for both CARWA and Heartbeat RWA. I truly enjoy moderating that program and I hope lots of writers join in!
Cheers, Julie

…for now.
I just completed teaching the Spring 2007 edition of my Writing for Magazines course for my local college (Keyano), and I’m really excited for several of my students! This particular group of people came to the class with specific goals in mind and it showed. They were focused on learning and applying what they learned to their writing. I think they all have what it takes to be really good writers.
Okay, Rhea, Leslie, Laura and Raylene… your homework is to WRITE! Call or email if you need some direction or advice. I’ll be calling you in a couple of weeks to get together for coffee/tea and discuss writing. Get those queries in the mail!

I’m officially 40!!!
I plan on celebrating all week.

The time factor.
“If my doctor told me I had only six months to live, I wouldn’t brood. I’d type faster.” – Isaac Asimov.
Time is a huge factor in productivity, and it’s the one thing virtually every writer I’ve ever met has complained about: I don’t have enough time to write.
When I first started writing, my kids were small and at home. I wrote in 15 min increments. That’s about how long my kids could go without interrupting me. I didn’t write very fast (only 4 pages a week!) but I still wrote a book a year that way. Here’s a list of some ways to write in smaller chunks:
Get up 30 mins earlier to write.
Write during your lunch and coffee breaks.
Hire a babysitter for 1 hr in the evenings so you can write.
Take your WIP with you to the grocery store and write for 20 mins in your vehicle before you go inside to shop.
Write in the bathroom.
Write in the bathtub (one of my personal favourites!).
Now that my kids are both in school full time I have 6 ½ hrs on weekdays to write, but do I get more done?
I didn’t at first.
I fell into a common trap – I wasted my time on reading emails (and replying to each and every one as they arrived!), reading blogs, reading the news, playing games on my computer (solitaire is addicting!) and research (I love to research, it’s writing that’s hard!). I discovered that too much time to write is almost worse than not enough. I felt no sense of urgency, no sense of “I have to get this done” with 6 ½ hrs of free time stretched out before me, so I got lazy and ended up doing less actual writing than when the kids were at home.
I learned a hard lesson: Too much time = no writing.
This is where I started to micro-manage my writing time. I began to think of my available writing time in smaller increments. I MUST write 4 pages before 11 am, then I can have lunch. I MUST write 4 pages before 1:30 pm, then I can run errands. I MUST write 2 pages before 3:30 pm, then I can spend time with my kids as they come home from school.
I also limited my time spent on emails. Now, instead of responding to each one as it arrived, I read and respond in the morning and in the evening. I read blogs in the evenings and do research in smaller chunks. I also removed the games from my computer, including solitaire (ouch!).

…check out these websites!
CURE (Cancer Update, Research & Education). Click on the BACK ISSUES link on the main page, chose an issue then chose an article. You can read the entire piece online free! There is also a free online newsletter that you can sign up for. If you’re planning to write about cancer I highly recommend checking this out.
http://www.curetoday.com/
EMERGENCY MEDICINE. Not only do they have their back issue articles online for free reading, they have a nice, neat index of all their articles and a website search engine. Very cool.
http://www.emedmag.com/
Another less article heavy site is FORENSIC NURSING. There’s still some interesting info here.
http://www.forensicnursemag.com/webx.html
RWA has a chapter devoted to medical romance writers. It’s called Heartbeat and it has a nice website with a long list of medical links (I’m a member and they’re a great group).
www.heartbeatrwa.com
Go to the For Writers of Medical Romance link. Here you’ll find all kinds of resources for your medical research.
